Advantages of GPON internet
GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) is a modern technology for transferring data over fiber-optic cable. The "G" stands for gigabit: the total network throughput can reach 2.5 Gbps. PON means "passive optical network" – a network with a minimum of extra equipment between the client and the provider.
GPON advantages over regular cable
Signal speed. GPON throughput can reach 2.5 Gbps (2500 Mbps), while copper "twisted pair" is mostly limited to 100 Mbps – 25 times less. That makes GPON ideal for high-quality transfer of large volumes of data. The high speed comes from using light for the signal, whereas copper carries an electrical signal. This allows several heavily loaded devices to be online simultaneously.
Signal reliability. An electrical signal in copper fades from the slightest cable damage or simply over distances above 100 m, requiring extra amplification equipment. Copper is also vulnerable to electromagnetic interference, and the signal can be secretly intercepted by attaching equipment to the cable. GPON has none of these drawbacks: it is immune to electromagnetic interference and weather (including thunderstorms), interception equipment cannot be attached, and minimal powered equipment sits between the client and the provider.
Transmission radius. A GPON network transmits data up to 20 km, covering a large area from a single node.
Scalability. GPON makes it easy to expand the network with new clients. Combined with high reliability, this reduces maintenance and support costs.
One cable for several services. Besides internet, the same single GPON cable can carry other services: digital TV, IP intercoms, video surveillance, etc. There is no need to run several separate cables to a home or office.
Independence from the power grid. Thanks to GPON, through which we connect most new subscribers, and to the powerful batteries and generators at all our nodes, subscribers keep their internet even during prolonged city-wide outages. Environmental impact. GPON uses less energy than traditional technologies, and contains no environmentally hazardous substances such as lead or mercury.
